I recently had the exciting opportunity to participate in ASAE’s Association Management Certification program. The course covers best practices in association management, membership and volunteer involvement, brand and business development, culture, and ethics — basically everything you need to know to be an effective association management professional. With my experience in marketing, this course was very beneficial because I was able to learn about all aspects of association management. Through this course, I gained a better understanding of how various parts of an association work, including the integral role that marketing plays and how it benefits the association. Here are just a few of the lessons I learned:

Know Your Basics

Understanding the nuts and bolts of an association is crucial — from how it’s structured to how leadership operates, an in-depth understanding of the organization sets the stage for our success. For instance, knowing exactly how our committees are organized can streamline decision-making processes and improve efficiency.

Members are Everything

We’ve all heard it before, but it really hit home for me during the course: our members are the lifeblood of our association. One interesting tip I learned is that when we personalize our communication with members, like calling them to discuss their membership renewal instead of just sending a generic email, it often leads to higher renewal rates. It’s those personal touches that can make all the difference.

Volunteers Matter

Volunteers truly make our associations tick. We talked about how recognizing volunteer efforts, whether through a simple thank-you note or by publicly acknowledging their contributions, can go a long way in making volunteers feel connected and appreciated. For our clients, we can consider implementing a volunteer recognition program to highlight outstanding volunteers.

Clarify Roles

It’s easy for things to get muddled when we’re all wearing multiple hats. By clearly defining everyone’s roles and responsibilities within the association, we can avoid confusion and work more cohesively as a team.

Professional Growth Matters

During this course, I was reminded of the importance of investing in our own professional development. With continuous learning, we’re improving our skills and demonstrating our commitment to excellence in association management. This continued growth benefits both us as professionals and our association clients.

Foster Inclusivity

I gained insights into fostering diversity, inclusion, and ethical leadership. For instance, during a group activity, we discussed scenarios where diverse perspectives led to innovative solutions, highlighting the value of inclusivity. These principles will guide me in fostering a positive and inclusive workplace culture, where transparency and accountability are upheld. By creating a safe and fair environment and motivating our team with trust and recognition, I aim to cultivate a cohesive and high-performing team that drives our organization’s success while prioritizing the well-being of every individual.
